Renting a car abroad when you live in the Nordics

A valid Swedish, Danish, Norwegian or Finnish licence is accepted across the EU and EEA, and the Danish authority adds Switzerland. Outside the EU and EEA, the Nordic authorities advise checking the local rules and often carrying an International Driving Permit. At the desk, many rental companies want a credit card in the main driver's name for the deposit.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an International Driving Permit to hire a car in Spain, Italy or Greece?

No. A licence issued in an EU country can be used anywhere in the EU, and the Swedish, Danish, Norwegian and Finnish authorities all confirm that their licences are valid across the EU and EEA. A provisional licence is not enough.

Can I hire a car abroad with a debit card?

Sometimes, but do not count on it. Many rental companies want a credit card in the main driver's name at the desk to block the deposit, some accept only credit cards, and a combined Visa/Dankort is normally treated as a debit card. Check the conditions before you book.

What is the excess on a hire car?

It is the amount you may still have to pay if the car is damaged or stolen. Standard damage and theft cover usually leaves an excess, typically 600 to 1,500 euros; extra cover reduces it or brings it to zero but often excludes tyres, glass, underbody, roof or keys.

Can I drive in the UK or Switzerland with my Nordic licence?

Yes. A visitor with a full and valid EU or EEA licence can drive in Great Britain for up to 12 months from arrival. Switzerland asks people living abroad for an International Driving Permit only in some cases, for example if the licence does not show the categories in Latin characters.

How old do I have to be to hire a car abroad?

It depends on the company and the car. The minimum age is generally between 18 and 21, many companies set an age range of 21 to 70, most charge a supplement under 25, and some require a licence held for at least a year.

Is the digital driving licence on my phone enough abroad?

Do not rely on it. The Norwegian Public Roads Administration says you must carry the physical card when driving abroad, as a digital licence on your phone is not enough, and rental desks ask to see a physical licence.
