Two subsea tunnels, no detour
The road between Ålesund and the airport is Rv 658 through two subsea tunnels opened in 1987, the Ellingsøy tunnel (3,520 m, 144 m below the sea) and the Valderøy tunnel (4,222 m, 137 m below the sea), both with gradients up to 8.5%. There is no alternative road to Giske and Vigra airport if the Valderøy tunnel is closed.
